Discover how cutting-edge image-recognition technology is transforming our fight against graffiti

The image and graffiti recognition app leverages machine learning (artificial intelligence) to analyse photos of graffiti incidents. By mapping and tracking graffiti activity across Christchurch, this initiative helps curb damage and identify repeat offenders. The project uses data from the public platform Snap Send Solve as well as from contractors to provide a comprehensive view of graffiti patterns and trends. 

The graffiti recognition software analyses each photo to capture key data, enabling the identification and mapping of repeat offenders. The platform matches graffiti images with similar ones stored in the application, helping to identify prolific taggers and related tags. This information is then used by relevant stakeholders, including community groups and law enforcement, to make informed decisions and take appropriate actions. 

In addition to reducing graffiti, we are aiming to encourage graffiti artists to participate in legal street art opportunities through the Council's street art programme. This initiative supports artistic talents by providing designated spaces for legal street art, encouraging creativity, and fostering a sense of community pride. 

This initiative has enhanced the social wellbeing of Christchurch by keeping community spaces and property free from graffiti. The data collected and visualised by the solution is used to inform better decisions, reducing the number of graffiti incidents and fostering a sense of safety and belonging.

The active participation of community groups, volunteers, and law enforcement has demonstrated strong community involvement and generated a truly innovative solution. 

As the project continues to develop, there is potential to share or license the solution to other authorities in New Zealand and overseas. By understanding the underlying motivations of graffiti offenders and redirecting their talents to positive avenues, this initiative not only addresses the immediate problem but also contributes to the long-term goal of creating a more liveable and inclusive city.
