Smart Bins are revolutionising waste management in Christchurch by using renewable solar power to compact rubbish, allowing each bin to hold up to six times the volume of standard rubbish bins.

Equipped with internal sensors and a computer/GPS, these bins provide real-time data to a cloud-based system, which sends alerts to contractors about the bin status. This technology ensures that bins are emptied only when necessary, reducing labour and costs while keeping public spaces cleaner and tidier.

The initial trial of smart bins at the New Brighton Whale Pool playground in 2017 was a resounding success. The trial demonstrated significant improvements in cleanliness, with waste contractor visits reduced from 14 to 21 times a week to just 1-2 times a week. The fully enclosed bins also attracted fewer pests, as rodents and seagulls could not access the contents, preventing litter from scattering and blowing into the sea.

Following the success of the trial, over 180 smart bins have since been rolled out across Christchurch. These bins have proven to be highly effective in reducing the amount of rubbish collected from the city's parks by 25%, saving ratepayers over $300,000 annually in maintenance costs.

The smart bins' sensor technology provides daily data on bin fullness, allowing for efficient waste collection and fewer bins needed in public spaces. The smart bins have led to a 93% reduction in bin emptying and zero customer complaints since their implementation.

The community has benefited from cleaner public spaces, fewer pests, and a more efficient waste management system. The positive environmental impact and cost savings have made smart bins a valuable addition to Christchurch's public infrastructure.

As the rollout of smart bins continues, busy community parks and open spaces like beachfronts are being prioritised for new installations. The community is encouraged to do their part in keeping public places tidy by using the smart bins responsibly.

With ongoing efforts to improve waste management, Christchurch is set to become a cleaner, more sustainable city for everyone to enjoy.
